PCB Manufacturing

A build starts with the right construction, a complete fabrication package and requirements that can be verified.

Match the board to the application

A material name and layer count are only the beginning. The operating environment, signal edge rates, power dissipation, mechanical constraints and assembly process all affect the construction you should specify. Share those requirements alongside the fabrication data so the quotation reflects the board you need.

For an existing design, identify the released revision and any requirements that cannot change. For a new design, flag the decisions that remain open: the stackup, laminate family, finished copper, drill sizes or surface finish.

Choose a manufacturing route

  • Prototype PCB — validate fit, function and the fabrication package before the next release.
  • Multilayer PCB — coordinate signal routing, reference planes, copper balance and thickness.
  • HDI PCB — review via structures, sequential lamination and fine-pitch escape routing.
  • Flex PCB and rigid-flex PCB — define bend zones, stiffeners, stack transitions and mechanical use.
  • RF and high-frequency PCB — specify the exact laminate construction and impedance requirements.
  • Metal-core PCB — review the dielectric and thermal path for power or LED applications.

What to send for a fabrication quote

Include the Gerber or agreed fabrication data, NC drill files, a dimensioned outline and the fabrication drawing. State layer order, material, finished thickness, copper weights, surface finish, solder mask, quantity and required delivery date. If impedance is controlled, provide the target, tolerance, reference layers and coupon requirements.

Distinguish plated and non-plated holes, routed slots, edge plating, countersinks and any special tolerances. File names alone should not be the only source of manufacturing instructions.

Review questions before production

The engineering review should resolve conflicts between the drawing, drill data and copper layers. Any change affecting function, fit or reliability needs explicit approval. A quote is not a substitute for a final stackup agreement or design verification.

Request the required electrical test, inspection records, material evidence and acceptance criteria at quotation stage. Final feasibility, tolerances, production time and price are confirmed against the complete design package.

Custom board design: benefits and tradeoffs

A custom PCB lets the design team control the outline, connector positions, circuit integration and construction around the product. That flexibility can help solve packaging or interface constraints that an off-the-shelf module cannot meet.

It also creates responsibility for the fabrication data, design validation, revision control and production qualification. Special materials or demanding features may increase setup cost, reduce sourcing options or extend the approval process. Compare those tradeoffs against the product requirements before committing to tooling. For an uncertain design, a prototype or pilot order can establish fit, function and manufacturing feedback before a larger release.

From reviewed artwork to a finished bare board

The manufacturing route can include inner-layer imaging and etching, inspection, lamination, drilling and metallization, outer-layer processing, mask, legend, finish and profiling. The actual sequence depends on the construction. Bare-board acceptance is distinct from component assembly and finished-product functional testing.

Specialized constructions such as HDI, rigid-flex or additive electronics require their own process review. They should not be inferred from a general claim of advanced manufacturing. Identify the features and evidence needed for this order.

Keep schedule and quality requirements explicit

Material availability, process sequence, tooling and design approvals affect the schedule. Include the requested delivery date and shipment destination with the files, then confirm the feasible production milestones after review.

Agree how questions, substitutions and proposed CAM adjustments are approved. Retain the released package and inspection requirements for repeat orders. A faster quote is useful only when it describes the correct construction and acceptance scope.
