Define the interfaces before choosing a cable
A custom cable assembly connects more than two connector part numbers. It must fit the enclosure, reach the correct interfaces and withstand the handling and environment of the finished product. Start with a drawing that identifies each end, the mating connector and the orientation from which the pin numbering is viewed.
A clear pin-to-pin table prevents ambiguous instructions such as “connect straight through.” Identify every conductor, shield, drain wire and unused position. Show any splices or branches, and distinguish protective earth from signal ground where the design requires it.
Specify the physical construction
- Exact connector, contact, seal and accessory part numbers, including approved alternatives.
- Wire or cable specification, conductor size, insulation, shielding and colour identification.
- Finished length, measurement datums and tolerances; branch lengths and breakout locations.
- Strain relief, sleeving, labels, fastening points and bend restrictions.
- Environmental, electrical and flammability requirements established by the product design.
For moving equipment, describe the actual motion and routing rather than relying on a generic “flexible cable” description. For a shielded connection, show how the shield terminates at both ends. Ask the proposed supplier to confirm tooling and assembly feasibility against the chosen contacts and wire combination.
Agree on inspection and test
Define continuity and short-circuit checks against the pin map. Any insulation-resistance, dielectric-withstand, pull or other test needs an approved procedure, limits and sampling plan. Test values should come from the applicable design requirements, not from a generic website checklist.
Specify whether you need individual serial numbers, lot traceability, test reports or a first-article sample. Include acceptable labelling, packing and connector protection so assemblies arrive ready for integration.
Include the harness in the system build package
A cable can be electrically correct and still be difficult to install. Share the enclosure drawing, connector access, assembly sequence and service requirements with the box-build package. Approve changes through a revision record so the PCB, harness and mechanical parts remain compatible.
When requesting a quotation, state the quantity, expected repeat demand, delivery destination and whether you are supplying any components. Confirm the available manufacturing and test scope for the specific assembly.
