Manufacturing Processes & Equipment

Evaluate equipment by the process it supports and the evidence it produces for your board.

Discuss your project ↗

Ask how the process fits the design

A machine model alone does not describe the capability of a production line. Process control, tooling, operator training, maintenance, verification and the exact board construction all affect the result. Ask which process route will be used for your project and which limits apply.

PCB fabrication process review

  • Imaging and etching: line geometry, copper thickness and artwork compensation.
  • Drilling and plating: hole structure, aspect ratio, registration and plated interconnections.
  • Lamination: stackup, materials, copper distribution and sequential build requirements.
  • Solder mask and finish: coverage, clearances, flatness and assembly compatibility.
  • Routing and electrical test: outline control, connectivity and required records.

Assembly process review

  • Paste printing: stencil design, apertures, board support and paste handling.
  • Placement and reflow: component packaging, polarity, placement data and thermal profile.
  • Through-hole and selective work: access, soldering requirements and temperature-sensitive parts.
  • Inspection and test: appropriate optical, X-ray, electrical and functional coverage.

Request project-relevant evidence

Ask for current process information or a factory review when your supplier-qualification procedure requires it. Confirm whether each requested operation is performed at the proposed site or through an agreed external process.

Bring special requirements into the technical review early: fine-pitch packages, unusual materials, press-fit connectors, coating, programming and mechanical integration all change the production plan.

Review the equipment in its process context

For SMT, discuss printing, placement, reflow and inspection around the actual component mix. For through-hole or mixed assembly, review solder access, fixtures and the proposed process sequence. For bare boards, connect imaging, drilling, metallization and inspection questions to the requested construction.

Ask which operations are performed at the proposed site and which depend on another facility. Request current evidence for the specific process where it is material to qualification. A historical photograph or a count of machines does not establish current availability, maintenance condition or achievable results.

Ask how the process is controlled

Relevant questions include program revision control, setup verification, calibration or maintenance where applicable, operator qualification, process monitoring and handling of out-of-limit results. Review an example that matches the board technology rather than requesting equipment names without a defined purpose.

For fixtures and test equipment, clarify ownership, development scope, access to records and arrangements for repeat production. Confirm capacity and timing within the quotation. This page does not present unverified machine models, production-line counts or placement-rate claims as commitments.
